Embed a Twitterfountain

Have you ever wanted to see what was happening at that one event you could not go to? Did the plain text-backchannels somehow leave you feeling disappointed?

Twitterfountain comes to your aid: we mash up tweets and images that share the same tags into a spectacular visual. Below is a sample. Change the settings and copy the embed code, and there you have it: your own twitterfountain!

New features:

There’s tons of new features, most of which can be found by opening the settings panel. The most significant changes are:

  1. Different animation types for tweets and images
  2. Image source can now include Picasa, Twitpic and yFrog
  3. More customization by changing the title bar, colors and logo.

Testing phase

We’re still in the process of configuring our new server. In the next few days, if your new fountains stops working, please visit this site and copy the embed code again.

I already have a Twitterfountain:

Right now we haven’t made the update automatic. This means you’ll have to manually replace your old embed code with the new code. Get it by clicking ‘embed’ in the fountain on this page!

Wordpress plug-in:

We’re currently working on a new version of a plug-and-play wordpress plugin, so it might not behave the way you like. Please use the regular way of embedding the Twitterfountain for best results!

Even more customization?

  • Are the tweets supposed to be clickable? I get a pointing finger, but clicking fails to open anything.

  • I just embeded it in Facebook, but it seems to ignore all the parameters I set up, like number of messages and speed. It seems to just display the default.

    This is what i embeded:

@Marc: we will look into the clickable tweets (they’re supposed to be clickable) and the Facebook embed!

  • tonya says:

i like this idea! tried to embed on myspace, got the default settings. Show me some water in this fountain…:)

  • Gerben says:

At least it works on Posterous.com, but not clickable…

works great on this site, but when I copy the code into Frontpage and save it, it shows as undefined on the web site. bryantfamilyfund.org

  • admin says:

@Alan, we’re no big fans of Frontpage. There’s no easy way to know what it does to your code for sure. Did you try editing the page with a normal text editor, pasting in the TF-code, and then saving it?

  • Phil Bradley says:

This simply *does not work* when you try and embed it elsewhere. You adjust it, add in your own terms and click to save in order to embed elswhere and when you do the code is completely ignored and reverts back to the original. I’ve just wasted 15 minutes of my life on this RUBBISH.

  • admin says:

    Hi,

Love the widget. We’re using it to track traffic with the #qctraffic hashtag… however, to be effective it really needs the time stamp to render. Any chance you can add that function?

    Let me know, thanks.
    Michael.

  • admin says:

@Michael. Thanks for the suggestion. Please add it to the Uservoice-tab, so other users can vote on it!

  • Aaron says:

Do you think it is possible to add an additional source so that it will automatically display anything from, a given twitter name?

    Thanks

  • admin says:

@Aaron, a lot is possible, let’s see what the other users think! Please add your suggestion to the Uservoice-tab and have the other users vote on it!

  • Carlie says:

We really wanted to use this for our event, unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to work. You adjust it, add in your own terms and click to save in order to embed elsewhere and when you do the code is completely ignored and reverts back to the original. :/

    It’s a bummer…’cause this is really cool.

  • eerkmans says:

Hi, thanks for your comment. We’d like to help with your problem. Maybe you can give some details about the kind of blog you’re trying to post to, and the browser and flash version you’re using?

Just to be sure, follow these steps:
1 – Click the “copy widget” button inside the fountain on http://www.twitterfountain.nl
    2 – Adjust the keywords,
3 – Click the “copy this widget” button.

When you’re in your blog editor, you can paste the code. If this code does not include your keywords you can actually change them on the spot, just replace the words ‘twitterfountain’ with your own keyword. This goes for the color and size as well. Check out this example:

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.twitterfountain.nl/embed/
    twitterfountain.js?fv_event=twitterfountain,
    fv_flickr=twitterfountain,fv_kleur=FF6600,
    width=400,height=300">

  • Robert says:

First, thanks for a great widget. I am interested in maybe using it for the upcoming global #tweekly review on Twitter. However, we need to filter out regular tweets with “tweekly” in them, and only use the hashtagged version. When I pass:

    fv_event=#tweekly

    or even:

    fv_event=%23tweekly

the Twitter Fountain loads the default color scheme and searches for “twitterfountain” tweets instead. Is there an easy fix to be able to search for hashtags?

    Thanks in advance!

  • eerkmans says:

    Hi Robert,
You’re right. After some testing and debugging we found that there’s a problem with using a hashtag in the javascript embed code. You can work around it for now by adjusting the twitterfountain on the spot, by typing the # directly into the “adjust settings” panel.
We’re working on a solution right now!

  • Robert says:

Thanks, eerkmans. I was hoping to embed this on the GTD Times site prior to the word-wide weekly review (#tweekly) tomorrow. If not, maybe we can still use it–but we’ll also get tweets from last.fm tweekly (not a hashtag).

In any case, thanks for fixing it.

  • eerkmans says:

    Hi Robert (and Carlie)
If I’m correct the problem should be fixed now. You can use # in the embed code again!

    Hoi Admin,

  • Don says:

Doesn’t work when I try to embed the code. Not sure what the problem is. Does it not work on facebook, myspace? Where am I supposed to embed the code?

  • richie says:

Very helpful and smart application, but it doesn’t seem to work with special characters such as swedish Å Ä Ö (if they show up here…) – Are you planning to look into that? I would definitely use this application if it worked for these special characters as well!

  • Henk de Bruijn says:

Twitterfountain won’t display any messages. -Twitter search failed. Please refresh the page.- What’s going on, is there some kind of error?

  • admin says:

@Henk we are using Twitter Search to find the tweets to display. If Twitter Search fails, TF cannot display the tweets. Please wait until Twitter Search starts working again.

  • admin says:

@richie Working on that, please refer to the Uservoice/Feedback-tab to see which items have been submitted for improvement and vote on the ones that are important to you.

  • Princess says:

How do you use it on myspace?

  • admin says:

@princess, you cannot use it on MySpace at this time. Please add your request to the Feedback-tab, and let other users vote on it!

  • Eleesha says:

I love your twitter fountain, thank you for making it available to us all, one thing I would ask is – can you make it clickable? I think this would be the icing on the cake to such a wonderful widget! TY :-)

  • Fe says:

Is there a way to change/make up the colors?

Ofwel, het veranderen van de opmaak?

  • admin says:

@Fe, No, unfortunately, the only thing you can do right now is turn the orange color filter off (in in the ‘adjust’-panel)

  • admin says:

@Eleesha Please add your suggestions for improvement to our Uservoice-account, so other users can vote on it. Do this by clicking on the Feedback-tab.

  • loichay says:

after many tests, picasa keyword as image source doesn’t work :-( my album source is public and photos are available in the picasa search on the keyword but no image on my twitterfountain with the same keyword …

  • admin says:

@loichay Oops. We’ll get right on it! Thanks for sharing!

  • loichay says:

tweets in french with accents “é, ê, è, à, …” have problem to be displaying on the fountain … the messages are note encoded in UTF8 ?
